How Was The Website Built?

This website was founded in 2021 and is still running now. It is designed and created by me independently (based on WordPress), including the content inside. The content and format keep updating as my mind changes. The current version is very different from the initial one.

I am an amateur photographer who used to like sharing my photos on social media like WeChat, IG, etc. However, the photos uploaded were constrained by auto cropping, default composition, or the limited texts for description. I need a space where I can express myself without being bound by any social media rules.

Then I got the idea to build my own website, a personal space like a digital diary. In addition, building a website from scratch is challenging and fun, because I had no knowledge of building a website then. It also taught me that any design work must be subjected to repeated practical trials and modifications, no matter how talented the idea is in the mind.

Naming

After thoughts, I came up with a word, “Dyno”. The original meaning of Dyno is “Dynamic”. “D” and “Y” are both included in my Chinese name “Dingye” and English name, “Davy”. “No” is not only a meaningless suffix but also represents a state of my mind: constant self-denial in the pursuit of relief and change.

Logo

I tried to use my writing signature first, finding that using the simplest geometric element is more in line with the style I want to achieve. After adjustment, I made it bold to be seen clearly in the tab.

The General Style of the Website

In the beginning, I wanted to display monochrome pictures only on the site. I believe monochrome photographs have a strong storytelling and humanistic quality. But now I want to strike a balance between mono and color.

Compatibility Improvements

After completing the PC version, I tried to make the website compatible with mobile device screens. WordPress provides some templates that are adaptive to multiple devices, but to achieve the best visual effect, each page needs to be specially adjusted for different resolutions.

Q&A

Q: Is it necessary to build a website?

A: Not necessary before you escape from social media. I gave up “playing my role” on social media and got tired of having to compromise with the rules of socialization. I needed a space where I could record anything with my own will.

Q: The website is kind of SLOW!

A: Due to the budget limits, I did not use a fast server. Instead, I am trying to increase the quality of images and readability of the whole site.

Q: What is your style?

None, I guess. However, why and how a picture is framed must contain the creator’s thoughts and emotions, even if I do not realize or intend to do so.
